The problem with the garage

The car has not been in there since the first winter

It starts with a couple of bins along the wall. Then the lawn stuff, then the holiday tubs, then whatever came out of the last room you cleaned. By February you are parking in the driveway and scraping the windshield every morning.

The wall is right there. It is just doing nothing.

Custom garage shelving takes that wall and turns it into the only storage you need. Built to your ceiling height, deep enough for the bins you actually own, and anchored into the studs so you can load it up without thinking twice.

What you get

Built for a garage, not for a showroom

Measured to your wall

Ceiling height, door swing, the garage door track, the water heater in the corner. The shelves are drawn around what is actually there.

Sized to your totes

Standard racks will not take a big tote two across. Yours will, because I set the depth and the tier spacing around the bins you own.

Anchored into the studs

2x4 ledgers lagged into framing, front uprights carrying to the floor. Nothing on this shelf is held up by drywall anchors.

Loaded, not decorative

Cross supports under every plywood deck. These are built to take paint cans, tools, and a winter of salt bags without a bow in the middle.

In and out in a day

Most garages are a single day job. You park in there that night.

Backed by my work

A workmanship warranty, and the same phone number to call if anything is ever not right. You get me, not a dispatcher.

The Region Build

How I build them, step by step

This is the same system on every job. It is the one the internet tells you to build, and it is the reason these shelves do not sag.

01

Ledgers

A 2x4 ledger runs the length of the wall and gets anchored into the studs, not the drywall.

02

Doubled ledgers

Where the load calls for it, the ledger is doubled up so the back edge of every shelf is carrying on two members.

03

Front uprights

Full height 2x4 uprights carry the front edge all the way to the floor, so nothing is hanging off the wall alone.

04

Extended frame

The frame is squared and extended to the depth your bins actually need, not to a catalog depth.

05

Cross supports

Cross members tie front to back on every level. This is what kills the sag before it starts.

06

Plywood decks

Plywood decks drop in on top, screwed down flat. Now it is a shelf you can stand on.

Why it does not sag

Overbuilding is cheaper than rebuilding

If you have looked into this yourself, you already know the failure: a shelf loaded in the middle bows, and once it bows it never comes back. The fix is not thicker plywood on its own. It is carrying the load in three places instead of one.

The back edge rides on a 2x4 ledger lagged into the wall studs. The front edge is carried by full height uprights that go all the way down to the floor. Cross members tie front to back under every deck. The plywood is not doing structural work on its own, which is exactly why it does not sag.

That is the whole trick, and it is the reason these outlast anything you can buy in a box.

Straight answers

Custom garage shelving questions

How much does custom garage shelving cost?

It comes down to how much wall you are covering, how deep the shelves need to be, and how many tiers. That is why the estimate is a ten minute video call instead of a price list: show me the wall and I will give you a real number on the call, not a range that means nothing until someone comes out.

How deep should garage shelves be?

For most people it is set by the bins. A standard large tote runs around 18 to 20 inches deep, so a shelf in that neighbourhood lets you push bins all the way back without them hanging over the front. If you are storing coolers, totes and camping gear, deeper makes sense. If it is paint and hand tools, shallower keeps the floor clear. We decide it on the call.

Will shelving fit if my garage walls are not finished?

Yes, and unfinished walls actually make it easier. The studs are right there, so there is no guessing where the framing is. A lot of garages around here have exposed framing on at least one wall.

Can you build around the garage door track or a water heater?

That is normal. Tracks, hose bibs, electrical panels, the water heater, the door that swings into the house. Building around the awkward stuff is most of the reason people go custom instead of buying a rack.

How much weight will a shelf hold?

Considerably more than a store-bought rack, because the load is carried by the wall studs and by uprights that reach the floor, not by thin steel legs. I build to be loaded. If you have something genuinely heavy in mind, tell me on the call and I will build that bay for it.

What wood do you use?

Dimensional 2x4 framing for the ledgers, uprights and cross supports, with plywood decks on top. It is the same material the good DIY plans call for, which is not a coincidence. It is the right material for the job.

Do you serve my town?

Munster, Highland, Dyer, Schererville, Griffith, St. John, Crown Point, Hammond and Merrillville, plus the towns in between. If you are near that list, just ask.
