There is no single number, and the honest answer starts there. Capacity is decided by how the load is carried, not by the wood itself: a bracket style shelf anchored into studs is commonly rated in the region of 100 to 150 pounds per shelf as general category guidance, while a shelf carried at the back by a 2x4 ledger in the studs and at the front by uprights that run to the floor is in a different class, because the floor takes the front load instead of the wall. So the useful move is not to hunt for a rating. Tell me what is going on the shelf and I build the bay for it.
I do not publish a pound rating for my builds, and I want to be straight about why. A number printed on a web page has not seen your framing, your span between uprights, your shelf depth or the pile of stuff waiting on your floor. It would either be so low it is useless or so high it is a guess. What I can tell you is exactly where the weight goes, which is the thing the number was standing in for anyway.
The load path
Two shelves, same lumber, different class
Put two shelves side by side. Same 3/4 inch plywood, same species of framing lumber, same screws. One hangs off brackets bolted to the wall. The other sits on a 2x4 ledger anchored into the studs at the back and full height uprights standing on the concrete at the front. They are not the same shelf, and the wood has nothing to do with it.
On the bracket shelf every pound you set down has to travel out along the bracket arm and then back into the wall. Weight at the front edge is leverage. It tries to rotate the bracket, pull the top fastener out of the stud and push the bottom of the bracket into the drywall. The further out you set the heavy thing, the harder it pulls.
On the framed shelf the front load goes straight down a piece of lumber into your slab. Concrete does not care. Nothing is being levered off the wall, so the connection at the back is only being asked to carry the back half of the shelf and to keep the run square. That is why the two builds live in different categories, and why a published bracket rating tells you very little about a framed one.

A rating assumes an even load. Nobody loads a garage evenly.
Here is the part that gets skipped. Any capacity figure you read, on a bracket, a bin rack or a prebuilt unit, assumes the weight is spread evenly across the whole shelf. That is how the number is arrived at in the first place. It is a lab condition, and your garage is not a lab.
In real life the weight arrives as point loads. A 5 gallon bucket of joint compound goes down in one spot. A stack of tile lands in one spot. A car battery, a toolbox, a case of water: all of it sits on a patch the size of a dinner plate, usually near the front edge where you can reach without leaning in. A 100 pound rating spread across 4 feet of shelf is a very different situation from 100 pounds sitting on 12 inches of it, and the second one is what actually happens.
The other half of it is time. Storage weight never comes off. Holiday bins sit for 11 months. Wood under constant load keeps deflecting slowly long after the day you loaded it, so a shelf that looked fine in March can carry a permanent bow by the following winter. That is the whole story on why garage shelves sag, and it is the reason I build with the span already taken out rather than working at the limit of what the deck can do.

Run your eye down that list and the reality check shows up. The wall of totes people worry about is mostly air. The things that actually load a shelf hard are paint, tile, salt, canned goods, tools and anything with water or metal in it, and there are usually only a few of them. A good build puts those where the support is, which is a planning decision, not a rating.

Back edge into wall studs, front edge down an upright into the slab. Two solid destinations beats one every time.
The span between supports
The unsupported distance between whatever is holding the deck up. Shorten it and capacity climbs sharply for the price of one more upright.
Point load or spread load
A rating assumes the weight is even. A bucket of paint on 12 inches of shelf is a different ask than the same weight spread across 4 feet.
What the fastener bites
Framing or nothing. A structural screw wants real lumber behind the finish, and half an inch of that run is drywall doing no work at all.
How long it sits there
Storage weight is permanent weight. Wood and gypsum both keep moving under a load that never comes off.
Depth and deck support
A deeper shelf puts the same tote further from the wall. Cross supports under the deck decide whether the plywood is structure or just a surface.
The fastener fails before the wood does
If you take one thing from this page, take this. In almost every failure I have seen or been called about, the lumber was fine. The connection let go, or the deck took a permanent set because the span was too long. The wood itself is rarely the weak link, which is exactly why asking how much weight the wood holds is the wrong question.
Drywall anchors are the clearest example. Toggles and plastic anchors spread load into gypsum, and gypsum is soft. Under a load that never comes off, the hole quietly opens up. An anchor that felt rock solid on installation day is carrying the same weight every hour for years, and the failure, when it comes, is sudden and takes the whole shelf with it. They are fine for a picture frame or a towel bar. They are not a storage connection. Anything structural has to reach framing and bite into it, which is the short version of whether garage shelves need to be anchored to studs. Interior walls are typically framed 16 inches on center. Anchor into every stud and your connections repeat every 16 inches, which is a comfortable spacing for a plywood deck. Skip to every other stud because a support was awkward to place and you have just built 32 inch spans, which is where 3/4 inch plywood starts running out of room under real weight. The wall spacing and the material limit meet at the same number. That is worth knowing before you decide where a support goes.

Redoing a loaded run costs everything twice and you have to empty the wall to do it. Overbuilding is cheaper than rebuilding, every time, and it is why I am comfortable telling you to load the thing.
What I would tell a neighbor
If you are building it yourself, stop shopping for a stronger board and start shortening the distance between supports. Get the back edge into studs with a 2x4 ledger. Put something under the front edge that reaches the floor. Keep the bays short. Set the heavy things near an upright rather than in the middle of a run. Do that and capacity stops being the thing you worry about.

That is why a shelf can be inside its published rating on paper and still sag in practice, and why I would rather plan around what you are actually storing.

Should I worry about the weight of a wall of storage totes?
Usually less than you think. A tote of clothes or holiday decorations is often only 10 to 25 pounds, so bulk is not the same as load. The things that genuinely load a shelf are paint, tile, salt bags, canned goods, water and tools, and there are normally only a handful of them. The right move is to give those a bay with real support under it rather than trying to make every shelf carry an emergency.
